The Discipline

What is Wrestling?

Wrestling is the martial art of deciding where a fight happens. You learn to close the distance, drive an opponent to the mat, stop their takedown attempts cold, and dominate from the top. At Furst Place MMA, our Wrestling classes in Hendersonville, TN turn that control into a skill anyone can build, whether you are a total beginner or already train another grappling style.

More than any other discipline, wrestling builds relentless conditioning and the kind of grit that carries over into every part of your life. Expect to get strong, tough, and lean fast, because few workouts in the greater Nashville area tax your engine the way a hard round of takedowns and scrambles does. Our coaches scale every drill, so day-one beginners and seasoned grapplers improve side by side without anyone getting crushed.

Wrestling is also the backbone of Mixed Martial Arts, which is why fighters who can dictate the action so often win. If you have been searching for wrestling classes near you in Sumner County, this is the place to start. Your first class is completely free and there is no contract, so you can walk in, try it, and decide for yourself with zero pressure.

Who It's For
  • Complete Beginners Build coordination, balance, and grit with drills that meet you exactly where you are.
  • Fitness Seekers Few things build conditioning like wrestling. Expect to get strong, tough, and lean fast.
  • Aspiring Competitors Add the takedown game that wins Mixed Martial Arts fights and grappling matches.
Your First Class

What to expect when you walk in

No experience needed, and your first class is free. Here is exactly how a session goes.

  1. 01

    Arrive and warm up

Show up about ten minutes early so a coach can greet you, learn your name, and answer any questions. Class opens with a wrestling-specific warm-up: movement drills, level changes, and falling safely. Learning to move and hit the mat without getting hurt is one of the very first things you build, and the whole room is welcoming to nervous first-timers.

  2. 02

    Learn the technique

A coach breaks down the focus of the day step by step, whether it is a single-leg takedown, a sprawl, or a top ride. You will watch a clear demonstration, then walk through the movement slowly before adding any speed. Nothing is rushed and no prior experience is assumed.

  3. 03

    Drill with a partner

You pair up with a supportive training partner and repeat the technique at a controlled, cooperative pace. This is where the skill actually sticks. Coaches circulate the room, give you small adjustments, and make sure you and your partner are both safe and improving.

  4. 04

    Live scrambles, always optional

Once you are ready, you can try light, controlled live wrestling to test your timing. It is never forced on a beginner and never on your first day. For your first class just wear a t-shirt or rash guard, athletic shorts or leggings without pockets or zippers, and bring water. Wrestling shoes are nice to have later but not required to start.

The questions and ideas behind the discipline, so you know what you are stepping into.

Takedowns and takedown defense

Everything in wrestling starts with the takedown. You will learn to change levels and shoot single-leg and double-leg takedowns, then chain into finishes when the first attempt stalls. Just as important is takedown defense: the sprawl, the down-block, and reclaiming position so you are never the one getting put on your back.

Conditioning and mental toughness

Wrestling is famous for building brutal conditioning, and for good reason. The constant level changes, scrambles, and grip fights demand a real engine, so you get strong and lean fast. Beyond the physical, the sport forges mental toughness. Learning to keep working when you are tired and uncomfortable is a skill that pays off far outside the gym.

The wrestling-to-MMA crossover

Wrestling is the backbone of Mixed Martial Arts because it decides whether a fight stays standing or hits the ground. A fighter who can score takedowns at will, or stuff every shot and stay on their feet, controls the entire contest. The top control, rides, and scrambling you drill here translate directly into cage time and pair perfectly with our striking and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu programs.

Starting wrestling as an adult

You do not need to have wrestled in high school or college to start now. Plenty of our members pick up wrestling as adults with zero background, beginning from the very first stance and level change. We coach the fundamentals patiently and scale the intensity to you, so adult beginners build real takedown skill without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

What should I wear and bring to my first wrestling class?

Your first class is completely free and there is no contract required to try it. For current membership pricing, give us a call at (615) 495-8560 and we will walk you through the options.
Is wrestling safe for beginners?
Yes. Learning to fall and move safely is one of the first things we teach, and we drill technique at a controlled, cooperative pace before any live wrestling. Live scrambles are always optional, never forced on a beginner, and never on your first day.

How does wrestling help my Mixed Martial Arts game?
Enormously. Wrestling decides whether a fight stays standing or goes to the ground, so it is one of the highest-impact skills a fighter can build. The takedowns, takedown defense, and top control you learn here are the backbone of a complete Mixed Martial Arts game.
